IIT Kanpur's First Gender and Sexual Diversity Forum
Our Story
What We Do
Our Digital Spaces
Unmukt is a students’ collective of IIT Kanpur which focuses on gender and sexual diversity. As a critical thinking forum, we raise issues and awareness on topics related to gender and sexuality. We speak for communities, opinions and individuals marginalized along these constituencies.
Unmukt began in 2013 as a Facebook page to sensitize community members on these invisible issues. The task before Unmukt, then a couple of students, was to bring these issues to the table. Not a lot changes; part of our struggle still rests on this notion of this invisibility. We constantly find ourselves negotiating our physical and non-physical spaces.
Our focus is diverse. We talk about LGBTQ+ issues, queer theory, feminist issues, women’s issues and their intersections with technology, culture and lifestyle. The idea is to link the lived realities of individuals with the larger structures of power and dominance, functioning as a voice of resistance -- a queer space.
In 2016, we were formally constituted in the Students Gymkhana of IIT Kanpur as a wing under the Community Welfare Cell. Our team expanded to include more students and we started a range of other activities. We now function alongside various other student clubs to queer and query all things IIT-K.
Our blog is a growing collection of our ideas and activities. We also have space for voices from the community. If you want to write for the blog, please send in your pieces to unmukt.iitk@gmail.com with proper contact information. If you would like to be published anonymously, do not forget to mention so in the mail, but pieces without a proper contact detail will not be accepted.
